Page order and page numbers
Add or remove 4 pages.
You can add or remove 4 pages at any time. In the magazine page overview, there is a list of buttons in the upper left corner of the webpage, above the magazine cover.
To add 4 pages: Click ‘Add 4 pages’. New pages are added to the bottom of the page overview.
To delete 4 pages: The pages you want to delete must be the last pages of the magazine. Click ‘Delete 4 pages’. Here we show you how to change your page order in case that is necessary.
Caution: Deleted pages cannot be restored.
Pages are always added and deleted in groups of 4. This cannot be changed due to the printing process of the magazine(s).
Add or delete fewer than 4 pages.
Pages are always added and deleted in groups of 4. This cannot be changed due to the printing process of the magazine(s).
Cover page and page 2.
Page 2 is the back of the cover. When you open the magazine to the first page, page 2 will be directly on the left.
In printed magazines:
- Even numbered pages will be on the left (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.).
- Odd numbered pages will be on the right (3, 5, 7, 9, etc.)
The last page of a magazine is the back cover. The cover and back cover are included in the total page count.
Move a page to the cover or back cover.
Navigate to the page overview of the magazine you want to edit. Here there is a list of buttons in the upper left corner of the webpage, above the magazine cover.
- Click ‘Change page order’
- Click and drag the page you want to move. If you move the page to the top of the list, it will replace the cover. If you move the page to the bottom of the list, it will replace the back cover.
- Click ‘Save’
Changing the page order after pages have been completed.
The page order can be changed at any time. Completing the page does not prevent you from changing the page order.
Changing the page order before editors have handed their pages in.
An editor that has been assigned a page will keep the same page even if it’s moved. An editor is assigned a page, not a page number.
Moving to the next page for editing.
To move to the next page for editing, you need close the page editor and select the next page from the page overview. The page editor will be opened again for the next page. Before you close the page editor, remember to save your changes.
Adding page numbers.
To turn on automatic page numbers, navigate to the settings of your magazine in the upper left corner of the page overview. Check the ‘Add page numbers?’ box.
The magazine will now be printed with black page numbers. Page numbers appear on the outside bottom page corners.
Please note: For technical reasons, page numbers are not visible in your PDF file. However, if you checked the ‘Add page numbers?’ box, the page numbers will be printed correctly.
To add page numbers to a PDF file you may add these manually using the editing tools in the page editor.
Page number display.
Page numbers will be printed on the outside bottom page corners in a printed magazine but will not appear in PDF files. To add page numbers to a PDF file you may add these manually using the editing tools in the page editor.
QR code on the back cover.
All printed magazines have a QR code on the back cover. This code contains important order and processing information needed for the production and shipping process. It cannot be removed.
Text formatting
Choosing a font size.
Best practices for font size in printed magazines:
- Body text: size 9-10
- Paragraph headers: size 12
- Headers or titles: size 18- 24
Please note: The above numbers are specifically for printed magazines. The sizes may seem small when viewed on a screen, but they will be legible in printed magazines.
Tip: Download a PDF file of your page and print it to see if the size you’ve used is legible.
Some fonts are larger than others.
Indeed, some fonts are larger than others, even though the font size is the same. This is because the some fonts differ in height.
Text format returns to default.
For technical reasons, the text format within a text block returns to the default format (open sans – 10) when the text is deleted or when you start typing at the beginning of the text block.
You can prevent losing your designed format by leaving the first character untouched. Start typing after the first character. When you are done editing, delete the first character if necessary.
Text block too large.
The text block adjusts lengthwise to the amount of text it contains. If you insert a lot of text into the text block at once, it can become so long that the blue boxes (with which you can make the block wider) disappear from the page.
In this case, drag your text block upwards until the blue boxes are visible again. Now you can make your text block wider and drag it to the right position.
Creating columns.
Select the text block you want to format into columns. In the menu on the left click on ‘Column’. Select the number of columns you want. Your text has now been divided into columns.
Color blocks and color tools
Using your own colors.
Click on the color picker and type in the color code you want to use. The color code is a combination of 6 characters (0-9 and A-F).
Press ‘Enter’ to activate the color code.
Are you not sure about the colors you want to use? Click here for inspiration. As soon as you have found a nice color, you can insert the corresponding code into the input field described above and press ‘Enter’.
Alternatively you can use the color circle to select a color. With the bars next to it you can adjust the brightness.
Reusing your own colors.
The 12 colors you used most frequently are shown at ‘Frequently used colors’in the color panel, so you can easily reselect them.
Changing color of clip-arts.
You can change the color of a clip-art on your page. Select the clip-art and click ‘Edit’ in the menu on the left. Now you can adjust the color.
Screen colors vs printed colors.
There may be a small difference in color between what you see on screen and how the same color looks in the printed magazine. This has to do with the structure of colors on screen (RGB) and the structure of the ink that is used to print (CMYK). In most cases, there won’t be much difference in color, but some colors, fluorescent colors for example, can’t be made with ink and will be a little different from the color shown on screen.
It is also good to know that each screen is different. Colors may appear differently on one screen compared to on another screen.
Place one color block across two pages (spread).
It is possible to place one color block across two pages (spread). There are two ways to do this:
- Place your color block on the page and give it the desired size, position and layout. Make sure that your color block reaches the outer dotted line and that the cutting edge is completely covered. This will avoid white borders on your page. Save your page. Then open the other magazine page and duplicate the previously created page with the ‘My pages’ button. Save the page. Your color block will now run smoothly over both pages.
- Place your color block on one of the pages and give it the desired size, position and layout. Make sure that your color block reaches the outer dotted line and that the cutting edge is completely covered. Save the page. Write down the values of the y-axis and the x-axis as well as the height and width of the element. Then open the next page and place a new color block with the same values. Save the page. Your color block will now run smoothly over both pages.
Images and clip-art
Change the shape of photos and images.
Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to change the shape of images.
You can easily change the shape of your image with a free website like glitterphoto.net. Upload your image, edit it and save it as a PNG file. Now your image is ready to use in our page editor!
Tip: Convert your image to a PNG file before you edit it. The image will then be saved with a transparent background.
Image/photograph quality.
For an optimal result, use images with a resolution of 300 dpi. A warning will automatically appear in the page editor if the resolution of an image is too low to get a sharp result (below 150 dpi).
Note that the quality of the image lowers when you enlarge it. Is the resolution of the image too low? Use it in a smaller size or replace it with another image.
Clip-art quality.
The clip-art elements in our editor have a high resolution and are printed sharply. Note that the quality of the clip-art element lowers when you enlarge it. A warning will automatically appear in the page editor if the resolution of an image is too low to get a sharp result (below 150 dpi).
Using your own clip-arts.
You can upload your own images and clip-art elements by clicking on ‘My images’ in the editor and use them for your magazine.
Types of files you can upload.
You can upload images/photos as JPG, PNG, BMP and GIF. JPG and PNG files are preferable.
You can only use a PDF as standing A4 format and page-filling. Click on ‘Page’ in the menu on the left and select ‘Import PDF’.
Uploading images is slow.
Because you are working online in Jilster, the high quality photos have to be moved from your own computer to the Jilster server.
If you are uploading a lot of photos at the same time, this can take a while. You could possibly upload less photos at the same time.
A powerful computer and a fast, stable internet connection are important when you are working in Jilster. The higher the upload speed, the faster your photos will be uploaded. You can check your upload speed here. A minimum upload speed of 10 Mbps should be enough.
Place one image across two pages (spread).
- Open the left page of the spread (with an even number), upload the photo in landscape format and put this on the page.
- Stretch it (by using the blue boxes above, left and beneath the photo) until the left side of the photo fills the page completely. Make sure that the photo covers the outer dotted line (cutting edge).
- Then move the photo to the desired position. If you are using a photo that shows faces, make sure they are not placed too close to the right edge of the page. Otherwise the faces will disappear in the middle of the bound magazine.
- Remember the point on the photo that cuts off with the right edge of the page (the values on the y-axis, the width and height) and save the page.
- Now open the opposite page (odd number) in the editor.
- Click on the ‘My pages’ button. Select and copy the previously created page.
- Drag the photo to the left and make sure that the spot you see on the left outer dotted line fits with the spot on the right side of the other page (the even page you created first).
- Save the page and close it.
- Check if the two pages correspond by clicking the ‘Example’ button.
Uploading a PDF file (image).
You can only use a PDF as standing A4 format and page-filling. Click on ‘Page’ in the menu on the left and select ‘Import PDF’.
Do you want to edit, crop or resize the PDF file in the page editor? Convert the PDF file into a JPG or PNG file and upload it. Now insert the file as an image in the page editor.
Convert images into a different file type.
You can do this by following these steps:
- Open the image in an editing program (Paint for example, this is a standard program on any Windows PC, or Photoshop).
- Click on ‘File’ and next on ‘Save as…’.
- Choose for ‘JPEG’ or ‘PNG’.
- Click on ‘Save’. The new file can be uploaded in Jilster.
Moving multiple elements on a page at the same time (group).
There are two ways to do this.
- Press and hold the Shift button, select the desired elements and move the selection (group) at the same time.
- Drag the mouse over the desired elements while holding down the left mouse button. These elements are now selected together and can be moved as a whole.
The blue boxes of my image/color block are missing.
If an image or color block is much larger than the page itself, the blue boxes that can widen or rotate the element disappear from the page. In this case, move the element in a random direction until the blue boxes are visible again.
Alternatively, you can adjust the height, width and rotation of the element in the menu on the left.
Using images from the internet.
The person who made the images/photos owns the copyright on these images/photos. It is not allowed (for commercial use) to use images or photos of others in your magazine without the owner´s permission.
Alternatively, there are many websites with images and photos you can download royalty-free (stock photos), for example Pixabay and Pexels.
Creating and editing templates
Creating and using your own templates.
Edit the page on which you want to paste your template and click on the button ‘Page’ in the top left corner and select ‘My pages’. Here all the pages you have made are listed and available for reuse. After selecting a page, you can edit it if desired.
We recommend creating templates in a separate magazine. This is especially useful if you want to give multiple pages the same basic layout or if you are planning to create a magazine in a certain layout more often.
Copy the layout or content from one page to another.
- Open the page on which you want to use the layout in the page editor.
- Click on ‘Page’ in the menu on the left.
- Click on ‘My pages’.
- Select the page you want to copy and click on ‘Use this page’.
Change the background of a template.
If the background is a background image (not selectable): Click ‘Page’ in the menu on the left and click ‘Background’. Here you can change or delete the background image.
If the background is a regular image (selectable): Click on the background you want to change. In the menu on the left, you will now be able to delete it.
Editing a text block that you cannot select.
A template is often built up out of several layers of images and colored surfaces. The reason you can’t select the element you want to remove is most likely that another layer is placed on top of it (for example a text block or an image). To select the element you want, you have to move the top layer first. For example, you can move this layer to the side, so you are able to select the element underneath.
Using images and clip-art from templates.
You can find all sorts of images and clip-art elements under ‘Image’ in the menu on the left in the page editor.
You can also find the images used for the templates here. The images are arranged by theme, such as animals, objects, party, symbols, etc.
Is a certain image you want to use not listed? Then unfortunately the image is not available as clip-art. We recommend to search for a similar image elsewhere.
Using PDF files
Using a PDF file for the background.
Uploading a PDF file with multiple pages.
Pages must be opened and designed one by one in the page editor. Therefore, you cannot place a PDF file with multiple pages into your magazine at once.
Designing pages in Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign and using these in Jilster.
You can do this by saving your designed page as PDF and then uploading the file in Jilster. You can copy your PDF to your magazine. The quality of your PDF stays the same. Pages must be opened and designed one by one in the page editor. Therefore, you cannot place a PDF file with multiple pages into your magazine at once.
The page of your PDF is used as standard A4 format + 4 mm cut at the edges (bleed). In the graphic program we recommend you use a format of 218×305 mm. Take in account a possible cut at the 4 mm edges (the exact cut depends on the number of pages).
Tip: If you are saving your file as PDF in Illustrator, you should turn off the Marks under ‘Marks and Bleeds’.
Requirements for a PDF file.
For the best result, keep the following recommendations in mind when using PDF files:
- The outer dotted line represents the cutting edge (4 mm). Make sure there is enough room at the edges of your file, since around 4 mm will be cut off after your magazine is printed.
- The inner dotted line represents the recommended margin within which you should place your text and images to make sure they are completely visible.
- Make sure the images in your PDF file are of high quality. For best results, we recommend using images with a resolution of at least 150 dpi. Pictures with a resolution of 300 dpi are optimal for your magazine.
- Note: Since the images are integrated into a PDF file, our page editor cannot check the quality. If the image quality is too low, no warning will be given.
- In order to reproduce the colors as best as possible in your magazine, it is advisable to convert the images in your PDF to a CMYK color profile. In contrary to RGB colors (display), images consisting of CMYK colors can be imitated with ink.
Measurements of the pages.
We use an A4 format (210×297 mm) with a 4 mm edge on all sides: That makes the format of a page 218×305 mm.
Editing a PDF file in Jilster.
It is not possible to edit a PDF file in our page editor. You can change the file in the program in which you created it (e.g. Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Word). Then upload the file in Jilster again.
Alternatively, you can use Jilster to place elements such as text blocks, color blocks and photos over parts of your PDF file.
Do you want to edit, crop or resize the PDF file in the page editor? Convert the PDF file into a JPG or PNG file and upload it. Now insert the file as an image in the page editor.
Saving, completing and deleting
Saving and completing pages.
As long as you are editing your page, you can save it at any time. To do this click the button ‘Save’.
When your page is entirely finished, you can complete it by clicking on the button ‘Complete page’. You need to complete all pages before you can order your magazine. A green check will appear above a page in the overview when it has been completed. As the editor-in-chief you can complete a page as many times as you want.
Completing speed.
This depends on the speed of your internet connection and the power of your computer. It will take several minutes per page before all data is sent to the server.
If you are designing a lot of pages, we recommend to complete a page directly when you have finished it instead of completing them all in the end.
You can also divide completing the pages. Ask if the other editors of your magazine can complete a few pages from their computer.
Print pages.
It is possible to print your pages: Go to the overview of your magazine and move your mouse over the page. Choose for ‘Download’. You will get a print preview (PDF file) in display resolution (72 dpi). If you let Jilster print your magazine, we will use a resolution of 300 dpi.
You can also order a PDF file of your entire magazine in display resolution (72 dpi). You can do this following the normal order procedure.
Another option is to order a sample copy at a reduced price. A sample copy has a transparent watermark and is not a final print. You can do this following the normal order procedure.
Editing a page after having completed it.
As (co-)editor-in-chief, you can edit a page at any time, also after you´ve completed it. However, if you are an editor, you must first ask the editor-in-chief to release the page again.
To reassign a page to an editor as editor-in-chief, place the mouse on the desired page. Click on ‘Editor’ and select ‘Release page’.
Change page order after completing.
You can still change the page order after completing. You won’t have to complete the pages again after doing this.
Delete magazine.
You can delete your magazine from the magazine overview.
Important: Deleting a magazine is permanent and cannot be undone.
Change the expiration date of your magazine.
When a new magazine is started it automatically receives an expiration date. This expiration date is set to one year after the date you started creating your magazine.
You can update the expiration date of your magazine at any time to up to a year at the future.
Example: On February 15th, 2019, you can update the expiration date of the magazine to February 15th, 2020.
By updating your magazine’s expiration date regularly you can keep your magazine as long as you’d like.
If you don’t update the expiration date of your magazine it will be deleted on the day it expires. Before this happens you will receive two automatic e-mail notifications, 3 months and 1 month before the expiration date.

Important features ☆
Dotted lines.
The dotted lines serve as important guidelines for text and images in your printed magazine.
- The outer dotted line represents the cutting edge. Here the page is cut in DIN A4 format. If you want an image to bleed off the paper, let the image go far beyond the outer line. This way you avoid white borders in your magazine.
- What is placed within the inner dotted line will be clearly visible in the printed magazine. You should therefore insert text within this line. Do not place text directly on the inner dotted line.
Note: A glued back takes up extra space at the ‘seam’ of the magazine (for glued magazines and books).
Cutting edges (cutting margin).
Make sure you take the cutting edges into account when designing a page. Around 4 mm will be cut off at the edges of the page after your magazine is printed (outer dotted line). If you want an image to go to the edge of the page (e.g. a full-page image), let the image go far beyond the outer dotted line. This way you avoid white borders in your magazine.
Measurements of a page.
Each page is A4 size (210 × 297 mm) with a 4 mm cutting margin on all sides.
That means the total size of a page is 218 × 305 mm.
The back page (cover) is wider than the other pages.
This is due to the back page (cover) including the spine of the magazine. The more pages your magazine has, the wider the spine and thus the back page (cover) is.
Make sure to fill the entire page to prevent gaps on the outer cover and spine of your magazine or book.
Receiving a warning when formatting a text block.
The page editor warns you if your text crosses the inner dotted line. Texts should be placed within the inner dotted line to ensure they are readable in the printed magazine.
Note: A glued back takes up extra space at the ‘seam’ of the magazine (for glued magazines and books).
Recommended image quality.
Working together in Jilster
You’re the editor-in-chief
Assigned page management.
Go to the page overview of your magazine, click ‘Assign pages’ in the bottom right corner. Now you will see an overview of all the pages with the corresponding editors.
You can also click on the name of an editor on the right. You will then see the page(s) he has been assigned.
Tip: Before you start assigning pages to editors, put the name of the person you want to assign it to on the page using a text block. This way you can easily see which pages haven´t been assigned to anyone (yet).
Editor and co-editor-in-chief: the difference.
If you invite other people to help design your magazine, you can either make them editors or co-editors-in-chief. If you want to assign someone one or more pages, it is best to make him or her editor. As creator of the magazine, you can decide whether editors can see the entire magazine (under ‘Settings’ in the page overview).
A co-editor-in-chief has the same rights as the creator of the magazine. This person, just like the creator of the magazine (the editor-in-chief), can edit and view all pages.
Note: If you work with different (co-)editors-in-chief, please make sure that you are not editing the same page at the same time. Changes will not be saved properly.
Incorrect e-mail address invitation.
If you’ve typed an incorrect e-mail address the page becomes occupied. However, you can undo this by deleting the invitation to the wrong e-mail address.
Delete the invitation by clicking on the white trash bin next to the e-mail address. The page will automatically be released and you can now send an invitation to the correct e-mail address.
Invitation e-mail not received.
First check to see if you’ve used the correct e-mail address for the invitation.
If no, see the question above.
If yes, ask the person you’ve invited to create a (new) Jilster account with the same e-mail address. After the person has logged on to his account he should be able to see the invitation to start working on the magazine.
Make someone co-editor-in-chief.
You can also choose to make someone co-editor-in-chief when you send them an invitation to edit the magazine.
You can make someone co-editor-in-chief when you send him an invitation to edit the magazine by checking the box ‘Co-editor-in-chief’. Then click on ‘Send invitation’.
You also can make someone co-editor-in-chief after they’ve accepted their invitation and have become part of the editing team. Click on his or her name and add a check mark to make this person co-editor-in-chief.
The co-editor-in-chief has the same rights as the creator of the magazine: He or she can see and edit all pages just like the editor-in-chief. It is therefore not possible (nor necessary) to assign individual pages to the co-editor-in-chief.
Important: Make sure you’re not working on the same page as the co-editor-in-chief!
Two editors-in-chief editing the same page.
If two people work on the same page at the same time, changes won´t be saved properly.
To prevent this from happening, communicate with each other via the chat box in the page overview of the magazine.
Assign multiple pages to an editor.
When you invite someone to join the editing team, you can directly assign him or her multiple pages.
When the editor has already accepted the invitation, click the ‘Assign pages’ button in the page overview of the magazine. Choose the editor you want from the drop down menu on each page you’d like to assign to him.
Alternatively, click on the editor´s name on the right side of the page overview to assign him or her multiple pages.
Hide certain photos from other editors.
As a chief editor you cannot hide photos. The entire editing team can view and use all the photos in the magazine they are editing.
A communal photo folder is used. The photos that have been uploaded can be used on every page.
If you don’t want to display certain photos, you can create a second magazine (do not invite others to edit this magazine!). Upload the photos here. When you edit a page in the first magazine, you will be able to select the photos from the second magazine without editors being able to see them.
Different languages.
When you’re preparing an invitation in the editor you can select the language the invitation will be sent in. Jilster is available in English, Dutch and German.
The invited person will be automatically working with Jilster in the language of your choice.
Send private messages to individual editors in the chat box.
It’s not possible to send private messages to individual editors. All the editors that have access to the magazine can read the messages in the chat box.
Allow editors to edit handed in pages.
In the page overview, hover over the page and select ‘Editor’.
In the window that opens, add a check mark to ‘Release page’ and click ‘Save’.
The page will be released to the editor. He or she will regain access to the page and will be able to continue editing the page.
You’ve been invited as editor
Viewing your pages after you’ve accepted an invitation to edit.
If you can’t see pages after you’ve accepted an invitation to edit there may be two causes:
- You have created a Jilster account with a different e-mail address than the one your invitation was sent to. Ask the editor-in-chief to invite you again using the e-mail address you created your account with.
- Alternatively the cause may be that your invitation has expired. Ask the editor-in-chief to send another invitation.
Handing in pages.
Once you’ve completed your page you can hand it in to the editor-in-chief of the magazine. You will no longer be able to edit your page once you’ve handed it in.
The editor-in-chief can only place an order once all the pages have been handed in.
Edit a page after having handed it in? Ask the editor-in-chief to release the page to you so you can edit it again.
Edit a page that has been handed in.
Once you’ve handed in your page you can no longer edit it. However, you can continue editing it by asking your editor-in-chief to release the page to you.
As editor-in-chief you can edit pages at all times, even pages that have been handed in or completed. Once you’ve made changes to a page you’ll have to complete it once again.
Send private messages to individual editors in the chat box.
It’s not possible to send private messages to individual editors. All the editors that have access to the magazine can read the messages in the chat box.

The different magazine formats all have their own production line, this is why the different formats cannot be ordered together.
If you would like different formats of the same magazine, they will have to be ordered separately.
Please contact our customer service if you want your orders to be shipped together.

If you wish to change your order, please contact customer service as soon as possible. We will check your order status and give you instructions for a new (changed) order if necessary.

When your order has been shipped, you will automatically receive an e-mail with a track & trace code, with which you can keep an eye on the delivery status of your order.
Delivery estimates are determined by, but not limited to, the shipping method chosen and the country it is being shipped to.
Orders shipped outside of the Netherlands may be subject to import taxes, customs duties and fees levied by the destination country. The recipient of an international shipment may be subject to such import taxes, customs duties and fees, which are levied once a shipment reaches the recipient’s country. Additional charges for customs clearance must be fulfilled by the recipient; Jilster B.V. has no control over these charges, nor can Jilster B.V. predict what they may be.
Customs policies vary widely from country to country; you should contact your local customs office for more information. When customs clearance procedures are required, it can cause delays beyond our original delivery estimates.
Recipient for home delivery.
Someone needs to be at home to receive the package, because we ship the orders with a track and trace service and your signature is required upon receiving your magazine.
The courier will attempt to deliver the package up to three times. After the third time the courier will leave a notification in your mailbox with information on where you can pick up your package
