Please note: for technical reasons, page numbers are only visible while editing the page, but not while viewing page previews.
The color of the page numbers cannot be changed.
Page number display.
Page numbers will be printed on the outside bottom corners of pages in a printed magazine but will not appear in PDF files or the shared online magazine. To add page numbers to a PDF file or shared online magazine you may add these manually using the editing tools in the page editor.
Please note Page numbers are only visible while editing the page, but not while viewing page previews.
Display page numbers correctly.
Page numbers starting from 10 and up will not be displayed in their entirety. Only the first number will be displayed (example: 1…).
This is only the case when viewing the page numbers in the editor. The numbers will appear correctly in the printed magazine.
Text formatting
Choosing a font size.
Best practices for font size in printed magazines:
- Body text: size 9-10
- Paragraph headers: size 12
- Headers or titles: size 18- 24
Please note The above numbers are specifically for printed magazines. The sizes may seem small when viewed on a screen, but they will be legible in printed magazines.
Tip Print out a page at home to see if the size you’ve used is legible once it has been printed.
Creating columns.
To create columns:
- Navigate to the page containing the text you want to format into columns
- Click on the text you want to format into columns so that the text block is selected
- Click on the drop-down menu under Column in the sidebar on the right
- Select the number of columns you want
The text has now been formatted into columns.
Disappearing text.
Disappearing text is caused by a text block that is too small.
You can tell this is happening because small red arrows will be visible at the bottom of the selected text block.
To solve this problem:
- Drag the small blue squares to make the text block larger
OR
- Make the font smaller so that the text fits inside the text block as is
Copy and paste text from Word.
To copy and paste text from Word:
- Use Chrome or Firefox
OR
- If you’re working with Safari, copy and paste the text into a separate text editor like TextEdit, and then copy and paste the text from TextEdit into Jilster.
Adding special characters (é, ë, ï) to a page.
On an Apple computer:
- Type OR copy and paste the special character, words, or text into TextEdit.
- Copy and paste the special character, words, or text from TextEdit into a text block in Jilster.
Alternatively, you can also use Pages or Mail instead of TextEdit.
Edit template texts.
On the front page of the Birthday magazine #1 are letters that spell out HOORAY. It is not possible to change these letters like you do in a text block. This is because the letters are images. Images can be put outside the outer dotted line, so that the images are cut off on the edge/margin of the magazine. This is also how it is done on the front page of the magazine LINDA.
If you want to change the letters, you can delete the images of the letters and select different letters at ‘images – theme – letters & numbers’ to put on the page. We have black and white letters and numbers.
Watch out/Take note that you have to use the blue squares to change the size of the letters and numbers. You can check the height at the right side of the screen to see if all your letters or numbers are the same height.
Put the letters about 4 pixels outside the outer dotted line at the side and at the top. This way you can be sure that the letters will be cut off for a small part
Using the ‘Walkway’ font.
DO use this font bolded OR as headlines and titles.
DON’T use this font unbolded or too small on low contrast backgrounds.
Caution If you use the fond unbolded, too small, or on low contract backgrounds there is a chance that your text will be illegible.
Using text emoticons.
This is not possible.
Copying text containing emoticons from other programs like Word will prevent the page from saving correctly.
We recommend using the clip art available in the editor or uploading your own image emoticons.
Color blocks and color tools
Select color from an image (or other element).
Use the color picker located in the right column under ‘color’.
Click on the color picker and click on the part of the image that contains the color you want to use.
Using your own colors.
Click on the icon for choosing a color and type in a color code.
The color code is a combination of 6 characters (0-9 and A-F).
Press ‘enter’ to activate the color code.
Adding a line.
There are two ways to add a line:
- Choose a square colored surface and make this as thin as a line. You can do this by changing the height or width in the right column until 1 pixel minimum. If need be, rotate the surface by moving the blue circle at the top.
- Type a line in a text block (using — or ___). Make the text block as long as it needs to be. You can also rotate the text block by using the blue circle at the top to get a vertical line.
Screen colors vs printed colors.
There may be a small difference in color between what you see on screen and how the same color looks in the printed magazine. This has to do with the structure of colors on screen (RGB) and the structure of the ink that is used to print (CMYK). In most cases, there won’t be much difference in color, but some colors, fluorescent colors for example, can’t be made with ink and will be a little different from the color shown on screen.
It is also good to know that each screen is different. Colors may appear differently on one screen compared to on another screen.
Images and clip-art
Crop or change the shape of photos and images.
Unfortunately, it is – not yet – possible to crop images or to change the shape of images.
You can crop your image with another program before uploading it to Jilster. After this, you can upload your photo and put it on your page.
You could also use another website to change your photo or to change the shape.
Another option is to hide parts of the photo behind colored surfaces that are the same color as your background.
Image/photograph quality.
The quality of the photos or images on screen isn’t the same as the true quality. This is because we use smaller images in the editor to make sure it works fast.
When your magazine is printed, the highest quality available of your image is used.
If you select an image, the yellow stars (in the top right corner) will show you the quality of your image. Four yellow stars is the optimum quality. Two yellow stars still give a beautiful result. The print won’t be beautiful anymore with less than two yellow stars.
To get images of optimum quality (four yellow stars) if you use them to fill in the whole page, you need images with the minimum resolution of 2575 x 3600 px.
Scan photos with a minimum of 300 dpi. If you want to enlarge them, you have to use a higher resolution.
Types of files you can upload.
You can upload images/photos as jpg, png, bmp and gif. Jpg is preferable.
You can only use a pdf as standing A4 format and page-filling. Choose ‘use pdf as background’ in the left column.
You can put text blocks, colored surfaces or images on top of the pdf background.
Error messages when uploading files.
If an error message appears when you try to upload one particular photo, while other photos upload without any problems, you can try the following:
- Your internet connection could be the problem. Try uploading again later and it might work then.
- Your browser could also be the cause of the problem. We advise Google Chrome. You can download Google Chrome here: https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/index.html
- If the problem still isn’t solved, try the following:
- open the images in a random editing program, like paint
- save the image again as a jpg or png file with a new name (‘save as…’)
- try to upload the anew saved image
If the solutions above don’t solve your problem, send an email to customer service. Please let us know which solutions you have tried and what is going wrong, then the customer service will find a solution.
Uploading images is slow.
Because you are working online in Jilster, the high quality photos have to be moved from your own computer to the Jilster server.
If you are uploading a lot of photos at the same time, this can take a while. You could possibly upload less photos at the same time.
A powerful computer and a fast, stable internet connection are important when you are working in Jilster. The higher the upload speed, the faster your photos will be uploaded. You can check your upload speed here. A minimum upload speed of 10 Mbps should be enough.
Place one image across two pages (spread).
- Create the left side of the spread by opening a page with a even number (2, 4, 6, etc.).
- Upload the photo, put this on the page and stretch it (by using the blue squares above, left and beneath the photo) until the left side of the photo fills the page completely.
- Move the photo until you only see the left side of the photo on the page. Put it just so that you don’t see any piece of the white background anymore.
- Remember the spot in the photo that is on the right outer dotted line.
- Save the page, write down the numbers of the y-axis, width and height, and close the tab. Open the next page with an odd number (3, 5, 7, etc.).
- Put the same photo on the right page. Type in the same numbers for the y-axis, width and height. Then move the photo to the right and make sure the spot you see on the left outer dotted line, fits with the spot you remember from the other half of the photo (on the even page). Save the page and close the tab.
- Check if the two pages correspond by clicking on ‘example’.
Uploading a PDF file.
You can upload photos or images as jpg, png, bmp and gif files in Jilster. Preferably choose a jpg file, because you will be able to make this file bigger of smaller.
You can also use a pdf file (standing A4) to fill a whole page. If you have a smaller photo, then convert your photo from pdf file to jpg file.
You can do this by following these steps:
- Copy your photo from Adobe Reader by clicking on it.
- Click with your right mouse button and choose for ‘copy image’.
- Paste the image in a graphic program such as Pain or Photoshop and save the photo as jpg file.
Convert images into a different file type.
You can do this by following these steps:
- Open the image in a editing program (Paint for example, this is a standard program on any Windows PC, or Photoshop).
- Click on ‘File’ and next on ‘Save as…’.
- Choose for ‘JPEG’ or ‘PNG’.
- Click on ‘Save’. The new file can be uploaded in Jilster.
Using images from the internet.
The person who made the images/photos owns the copyright on these images/photos. It is not allowed (for commercial use) to use images or photos of others in your magazine.
However, you can ask the person who made the image/photo if you can use the image/photo in your magazine.
There are also lots of websites with images and photos you can download royalty-free (stock photos).
Moving multiple elements on a page at the same time (group).
Press and hold the Shift button, select the images (or images and colored surfaces) and move the selection (group) at the same time.
Creating and editing templates
Reuse your own templates or pages.
We recommend creating templates in a separate magazine. This is especially useful if you want to give multiple pages the same basic layout or if you are planning to create a magazine in a certain lay-out more often.
To use your own templates:
Edit the page on which you want to paste your template and click on the button ‘own pages’ in the top left corner. Then select the page you want.
Copy the layout or content from one page to another.
- Open the (empty) page on which you want to use the lay-out and click on ‘edit’.
- Click on ‘my pages’ in the left column.
- Select the page you want to copy and click on ‘use this page’.
Change the background image of a template.
- Click on the background you want to change.
- Click on ’empty’ in the right column.
- Drag the image you want to the block with ‘image’ in the right column.
Editing a textblock that you cannot select.
A template is often built up out of several layers of images and colored surfaces. The reason you can’t select the element you want to remove is most likely that another layer is placed on top of it (for example: a text block or an image). To select the element you want, you have to move the top layer first. For example, you can move this layer to the side, so you are able to select the element underneath.
Using images and clip art from templates.
You can find all sorts of images and pictures you can use in the left column of the editor under ‘images’, under the button ‘theme’.
You can also find the images used for the templates here. The images are arranged by theme, such as animals & farming, objects, party, symbols, etc.
Using PDF files
Can I use a PDF for the background?
You can add element like text blocks, colored surfaces and pictures to a page. It is not possible to edit the pdf on the page.
You can zoom in on the pdf. This way the pdf will be bigger on the page. After this, you are able to move the pdf on the page.
Can I create pages in Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign and use these in Jilster?
Yes, you can do this by saving your file as pdf and then uploading the file in Jilster. You can copy your pdf page per/for page to your magazine. The quality of your pdf stays the same.
The page of your pdf is used as standard A4 format + 4 mm cut at the edges. In the graphic program you can best use a format of 218×305 mm. Take account of a possible cut at the 4 mm edges (the exact cut depends on the number of pages).
Tip: If you are saving your file as pdf in Illustrator, you should turn of the Marks under ‘Marks and Bleeds’.
What are the requirements a pdf has to meet?
A pdf will always fill up the whole page. Make sure there is enough room at the edges of your file at the snijranden. Around 4 mm will be cut off at the edges of the page after your magazine is printed.
The dotted line on your screen shows where the cut will be. We advise a format of 218×305 mm for pages made in a graphic program.
You could also save a Word file as pdf and use this to fill your page. Make sure there is enough room at the edges of the page for the cut. All text has to be within the inner dotted lines if you want to be sure it is legible!
What are the exact measurements of the pages?
We use an A4 format (210×297 mm) with a 4 mm edge on all sides: that makes the format of a page 218×305 mm.
Saving, publishing, and deleting
Saving and publishing pages.
As long as you are editing your page, you can save it at anytime. To do this click the button ‘save‘.
When your page is completely finished, you can publish it by clicking on the button ‘publish‘.
You need to publish all pages before you can order your magazine.
A green check will appear above a page in the overview when it is published.
Publishing doesn’t mean that your page or magazine will become public on the Jilster website.
Publishing speed.
This depends on the speed of your internet connection and the power of your computer. It will take several minutes per page before all data is sent to the server.
If you have made a lot of pages, it is a good idea to publish the finished pages.
You can also divide publishing the pages. Ask if the other editors of your magazine want to publish a few pages from their computer.
Print pages.
It is possible to print your pages:
- Go to the overview of your magazine and move your mouse over the page. Choose for ‘download”. You will get a print preview (pdf file) in display resolution (72 dpi). If you let Jilster print your magazine, we will use a resolution of 300 dpi.
- Another option is to print a sample at a reduced price. You can do this following the normal order procedure.
Barcode on back cover.
Yes, this will be printed. The white block contains the barcode with information about the magazine (order number). This information is necessary for shipping.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to move the white block to another spot on the back cover.
Change page order after publishing.
You can still change the page order after publishing. You won’t have to publish any pages again.
Delete magazine.
You can delete your magazine from the magazine overview.
Important: deleting a magazine is permanent and cannot be undone.
Change the expiration date of a magazine.
When a new magazine is started it automatically receives an expiration date. This expiration date is set to one year after the creation date of the magazine.
You can update the expiration date of your magazine at any time to up to a year at the future.
Example: on February 15th, 2018, you can update the expiration date of the magazine to February 15th, 2019.
By updating your magazine’s expiration date you can keep your magazine as long as you’d like.
If you don’t update the expiration date of your magazine it will be deleted on the latest selected date. Before this happens you will receive two automatic e-mail notifications, 3 months and 1 month before the deletion date.

Important features
Dotted lines.
The dotted lines serve as important guidelines for text and images in your printed magazine.
The outer dotted line is the cutline. The inner dotted line ensures your text will be clearly visible.
For full-page images: place the image outside the outer dotted line. Placing the image exactly on, or inside the outer dotted line may result in a white border.
Please note: when working with PDF files always make sure the text is inside the inner dotted line.
Cutting edges (cutting margin).
Make sure there is enough room at the edges of your file at the cutting edges.
Measurements of a page.
Each page is A4 size (210 × 297 mm) with a 4 mm margin on all sides.
That means the total size of a page is 218 × 305 mm.
The back page (cover) is wider than the other pages.
This is due to the back page (cover) including the spine of the magazine.
The more pages your magazine has, the wider the spine and thus the back page (cover) is.
Make sure to fill the entire page to prevent gaps on the outer cover and spine of your magazine or book.
Image quality (star rating).

Assigned page management.
Go to the overview page of your magazine, click a page and then click ‘move’. Now you will see an overview of all the pages, with the corresponding editors.
Tip: Before you start assigning pages to editors, put the name of the person you want to assign it to on the page using a text block. This way you can see which pages won’t be assigned to anyone.
Incorrect e-mail address invitation.
If you’ve typed an incorrect e-mail address the page becomes occupied. However, you can undo this by deleting the invitation to the wrong e-mail address.
Delete the invitation by clicking the white trash bin next to the e-mail address. The page will automatically be released and you can now invite the correct e-mail address to edit the page.
Invitation e-mail not received.
Check to see if you’ve used the correct e-mail address for the invitation and ask the person you’ve invited to create a (new) account with the same e-mail address. After they’ve logged into their account they should be able to see the invitation to start working on the magazine.
Make someone co-editor-in-chief.
You can make someone co-editor-in-chief after they’ve accepted their invitation and have become part of the editing team. Then, click on their name and add a check mark to make them co-editor-in-chief.
You can also choose to make someone co-editor-in-chief when you send them an invitation to edit the magazine.
A co-editor-in-chief is able to edit all the pages, just like the chief-editor. It is therefore not possible (or needed) to assign pages to a co-editor-in-chief.
Important: Make sure you’re not working on the same page as the co-editor-in-chief!
Two editors-in-chief editing the same page.
You can communicate this to each other via the chat box in the page overview of the magazine you’re working on.
Assign multiple pages to an editor.
There are two ways you can assign multiple pages to an editor:
- Select multiple pages when you’re sending an invitation to someone, or
- Click the ‘assign pages’ button in the page overview of the magazine. Choose the editor you want from the drop down menu on each page you’d like to assign to them.
Hide certain photos from other editors.
As a chief editor you cannot hide photos. The entire editing team can view and use all the photos in the magazine they are editing.
A communal photo folder is used. The photos that have been uploaded can be used on every page.
If you don’t want to display certain photos, you can create a second magazine and upload these photos to the second magazine. Then you will be able to select the photos from this photo folder without your editing team being able to see them.
Different languages.
When you’re preparing an invitation in the editor you can select the language the invitation will be sent in.
You can choose from English, Dutch and German.
Send private messages to individual editors in the chat box.
It’s not possible to send private messages to individual editors. All the editors that have access to the magazine can read all the messages in the chat box.
Allow editors to edit ‘handed in’ pages.
In the page overview, you can hover over the page and select ‘editor’.
In the window that opens, add a check mark to ‘release page’ and click save.
The page will be released to the editor. They will regain access to the page and will be able to continue editing the page.
You’ve been invited (as editor)
Viewing your pages after you’ve accepted an invitation to edit.
If you can’t see pages after you’ve accepted an invitation to edit there may be two causes:
- It is possible you’ve create an account with a different e-mail than the e-mail an invitation was sent to. Ask the editor-in-chief to invite you again using the e-mail you used to create an account.
- Alternatively the cause may be that your invitation has expired. Ask the editor-in-chief to send another invitation.
Handing in pages.
Once you’ve completed your page you can hand it in to the editor-in-chief of the magazine. You will no longer be able to edit your page once you’ve handed it in.
The editor-in-chief can only place an order once all the pages have been handed in.
Edit a page after handing it in? Ask the editor-in-chief to release the page to you so you can go back to being able to edit the page.
Edit a page that has been ‘handed in’.
Once you’ve handed in your page you can no longer edit it. However, you can continue editing it by asking your editor-in-chief to ‘release’ the page for you.
As editor-in-chief you can edit pages at all times, even pages that have been handed in or published. Once you’ve made changes to a page you’ll have to publish it once again.

The price of a sample copy is the price of a single magazine when ordering 100 copies. Find the price of a sample copy by using the price calculator. Simply enter your magazine’s page numbers and enter 100 as the amount. The price per magazine is the price for one sample copy of your magazine.

The different magazine formats all have their own production line, this is why the different formats cannot be ordered together.

Magazine shipping information.
Magazines are often made with a deadline in mind. That’s why we’ve developed the delivery calculator. This enables you to find out when you need to order your magazine in order to receive it on tme for your event.
If your country isn’t listed in the calculator, please contact customer service so we can add it for you.
Shipping time.
Calculate your delivery estimate by using the delivery calculator on our shipping page.
Delivery estimates are determined by, but not limited to, the shipping method chosen and the country it is being shipped to.
Orders shipped outside of the Netherlands may be subject to import taxes, customs duties and fees levied by the destination country. The recipient of an international shipment may be subject to such import taxes, customs duties and fees, which are levied once a shipment reaches the recipient’s country. Additional charges for customs clearance must be fulfilled by the recipient; Jilster B.V. has no control over these charges, nor can Jilster B.V. predict what they may be.
Customs policies vary widely from country to country; you should contact your local customs office for more information. When customs clearance procedures are required, it can cause delays beyond our original delivery estimates.
Recipient for home delivery.
Someone needs to be at home to receive the package, because we ship the orders with a track and trace service and your signature is required upon receiving your magazine.
The courier will attempt to deliver the package up to three times. After the third time the courier will leave a notification in your mailbox with information on where you can pick up your package.
