What is the minimum quality needed for my photos?

You can rate the quality of the photos and images you upload with the yellow stars in the top right corner of editor.

  • 4 stars: best quality
  • 3 stars: good quality
  • 2 stars: mediocre quality (not recommended)
  • 1 star: bad quality (not recommended)

If you want to achieve the best quality (the full 4 stars) for your photos or images, when used on a full page, the minimum resolution needs to be 2575 x 3600 px2.

Pages are sent to the printer in a 300dpi quality (which translates to 2575 x 3600 pixels).

What do I need to watch out for regarding the various file formats?

Text can best be copied and pasted into the Jilster editor, for best quality. Otherwise there is a risk that the text will appear grainy and be illegible.

Images and photos can best be uploaded in jpg/jpeg.

Please note: If you format the text and photos in (for example) Word  first, and then save the file as a PDF file, this will result in great loss of quality.

A drawing or a letter that has been scanned into the computer can best be uploaded as jpg/jpeg.

If you have PDF files, you can upload these to your pages as well. However, make sure there is enough of a margin around the edges (text needs to be inside the inner dotted line). So for a PDF we recommend keeping in mind that aprox. 4 mm will be cut off the page.

It isn't possible to upload a powerpoint file directly. However, you can upload a powerpoint file by converting it to a jpg/jpeg file first.

Which file types can I upload?

It is possible to upload the following file types:

  • PDF
  • JPG (recommended)
  • GIF

A PDF can only be used in a portrait-oriented A4 paper size format. In the left-hand column, select 'use the PDF file as a background', click 'upload', look up the file on your computer, and open it. After a few seconds your PDF will appear. Click it and you will see a small preview. Next, click the preview and then click 'use this page'.

If you want, you can place a text block or a color block over the PDF background.

The pages will be sent to the printer in a 300 dpi/ppi quality, which translates to 2575x3600 pixels. If an image with this resolution is uploaded in Jilster as a jpg file, this image can be used to fill an entire page without loss of quality.

How can I tell if the quality of my image is high enough to be printed?

You can rate the quality of the photos and images you upload with the yellow stars in the top right corner of editor.

  • 4 stars: best quality
  • 3 stars: good quality
  • 2 stars: mediocre quality (not recommended)
  • 1 star: bad quality (not recommended)

How many photos can I save, and how much storage space (in MB's) do I have?

You can store an unlimited number of photos and megabytes.

How do I insert horizontal and vertical lines?

There are two ways you can insert a line:

Select a color block and narrow it down, until it is a straight line. You can also rotate the color block.

Or: type a line in a text block (with the --- or ___ keys). Drag this block until it has the desired length. Turn the text block by using the circle at the top, if you want to insert a vertical line.

The photo quality seems insufficient. How is this possible?

The quality of the photos rendered in the editor (working page) does not match the actual quality.

This happens because we use smaller images in the editor, to enhance the speed of the editor and let you work faster.

When the page is published, these images will be replaced by the images of the original quality.

In other words: during the printing process the highest available quality of the photo will be used.

Tip: Check the quality of your images by publishing the page.

Can I use bitmap files?

If your photos are in bitmap file format, you can convert them to the jpg/jpeg file format, so you can upload them.

This is how you do it:

  1. open the image in a photo editing program (for instance Paint, a standard program included in any Windows computer)
  2. click 'File' and then 'Save as'
  3. below, at 'File type', select 'JPEG'
  4. click 'Save'. Now you can upload the new file in Jilster.

How do I frame an image or a photo?

There are frames available in the editor in the 'Theme images' tab. Choose a frame you want to use, place it on the page (over the photo you want to frame) and then resize it to fit the photo using the sizing tools on the right.

You can also add borders to photos or images by placing a checkmark in the 'border' option. This option is only visible when an image is selected.

Can I create a spread (one image on two pages)?

Yes, you can. Here's how:

  1. Open the left page you want the spread to start on (number 2, 4, 6 etc)
  2. Upload a horizontal image, drag it onto the page and stretch it so that half the image is covering the magazine page (stretching is done by clicking and holding the blue squares in the image corners and 'pulling' them until the desired size has been reached)
  3. Once you've positioned the left side of the image over the entire page (make sure there is no white space left around the image) make a note of where the image is cut off at the right side (the outer dotted line). You can write down the values of the y-axis, height and width.
  4. Save the page, and then close it and open the magazine page next to it (number 3, 5, 7 etc)
  5. Place the image onto the page and enter the height and width you just wrote down so that the images are exactly the same size.
  6. Position the right side of the image over the entire page and make sure the 'cutting line' (outer dotted line) lines up with the same spot on the other page. That way they align nicely.

Make sure the two pages align correctly by checking the pages with the 'Browse through magazine' button (in the magazine page overview).

Requirements for a Spread:

  • A high quality image, that retains it's quality when stretched (minimum of 3, but preferably 4 stars).
  • A horizontal image. Vertical images can be used as well, but most of the page will be lost due to de resizing.
  • Make sure you don't position anything important (like someone's nose!) near the 'cutting line' line.
  • Another way to do this is to use an editing program to split an image up beforehand and then uploading each of these 'image halves' seperately.
  • Pre-made spread images are available in the editing room as well!

Can I use a photo that is a PDF file?

On the site you can add photos or drawings in jpg/jpeg, png, bmp, and gif file formats. It is best to select a jpg file, because you will be able to enlarge or minimize it later.

You can also use a PDF file (A4 size, portrait) to fill an entire page. If you have a smaller photo, then convert the photo in the PDF file to a jpg file.

This is how you do it:

  1. Copy the photo from Adobe Reader by clicking it to open it
  2. Next, click the right mouse button and select 'copy image'.
  3. Paste the image in a graphics design program such as Paint or Photoshop and save the photo as a jpg/jpeg file.
